Battle Abbey, East Sussex

The Battle of Hastings – without doubt the most famous battle in English history. On October 14th 1066, the armies of England’s King Harold and the invading William of Normandy clashed in combat on Senlac Field in East Sussex to fight for the English throne. The two armies were well matched although Harold’s were battle weary from gruelling conflicts throughout northern England and an exhausting march south to Hastings. The outcome was that William eventually won a resounding victory to become William the Conqueror.

King William built Battle Abbey in around 1070 and it still stands proud at the centre of the picturesque and bustling East Sussex market town of Battle which grew up around it.
